arrangements for chuck brown. the man who helped create the unique mix of funk and soul died yesterday after a long bout with pneumonia. he was 75 and today, the tributes continue to pour in. >> over the next hour and a half, we'll remember chuck brown through the music of the backyard band. a group that got their big break thanks to chuck brown. >> but first, matt joins us live from chuck brown way, that's the street in northwest d.c. with reaction from some of those who helped chuck brown create his great music. matt. >> reporter: to his many fans, chuck brown was the man who wowed them up and used like the howard theater. many of the people who worked with chuck, he provided wisdom, inspiration, and guidance. as we have been hearing a lot over the past 24 hours, chuck brown, known to generations of washington music fans as the god father of go-go. >> he was the nicest guy you could ever meet. >> one day after chuck's death, a lot of people are remembering the godfather more as a father figure. >> got a lot of people off the streets working with him, playing for him. >> people like

became d.c. classics. tonight the entire area mourning the loss of chuck brown, who has died at the age of 75. few artists in our town have had the enduring impact chuck brown had. a month or so ago he was admitted to john hopkins hospital with a publicly undisclosed illness. since that time, the rumor mill was filled with stories about his condition and whether indeed he was even still alive. today it was confirmed chuck brown has died. reportedly from complications with pneumonia. ♪ >> reporter: charles brown's musical career spanned some 50 years. there was seldom a moment when he and his guitar were not together jamming out in front of a crowd of bobbing heads and moving feet. the north carolina native got his start in the '60s playing the guitar for a d.c. based latin band. by the early '70s chuck brown was coming into his own and go-go was born. the godfather of go-go what the world came to call brown, creator of a musical genre that became synonymous with d.c. brown described it as jazz infused funk music with latin and african flairs driven by percussian and accente

investigation. vestigation. >>> chuck brown's family is holing a public viewing at the howard theater today. >> throughout the day, thousands of fans are expected to come out in honor of the godfather of go-go. melanie alnwick is live at howard theater with details on the tribute this morning. >> reporter: good morning. based on the number of media who are already here this morning, it looks like it will be a pretty well attended event. you said thousands of people are expected. we've heard some estimates as many as 20,000 or 30,000 people. it will be quite the scene here this afternoon. the family has made plans for a very quiet, respectful event. the 75-year-old godfather of go- go died may 17th from complications from pneumonia after a lengthy hospital stay. since then, fans have come to this area not far from where brown grew up to leave tokens of respect and appreciation. brown was scheduled to play a sold-out show at the newly renovated howard on april 1st. he fell ill just days before that. today, the formal farewell begins first with this public viewing. fans will able to quietly wa

brown was using computers at the central library to log on to craigslist and today that's exactly where they found him. it was behind these doors at the central library where police say david brown set his scheme into motion. and it was here behind a computer screen he was busted. >> we suspect that he may have been lining up his next victim. >> reporter: police say brown used library computers to postfake ads on craigslist. advertising big ticket items like watches. police have linked brown to four cases, at one he fired a shot at a victim who ran away. but when police showed up at the library, brown had nowhere to run. >> you're taking advantage of the little something they give us. >> reporter: everyone who uses the library has to swipe their library card and the websites visited can be traced. >> when i do go to meet people i always take somebody with me. >> there's a lot of things on social network you didn't trust. >> reporter: because you never know who's really on the other end of the computer. >> reporter: and police are now questioning brown to see if he's linked to any other
things rolling on this may 29. good morning, washington. i am steve chenevey. >> i am pamela brown. we begin with traffic and weather. lisa baden standing by but we start with meteorologist adam caskey. temperatures will keep climbing. >> we are starting the day in the '70s, on our way to nearly 90 this afternoon with humidity. you will feel that first thing today when. you step when it will get run out in the thundershowers later on today. expect downpours and localized heavy rain. not everybody will see the downpours, but we will have chareas of heavy showers. it is 73 degrees right now in arlington, 72 in suitland and leesburg, 69 in hamilton, virginia 71 in waldorf, 69 in culpeper. widespread showers and thunderstorms later on today with localized downpours. some of the first few storms could started around lunchtime west of interstate 81. how does it look so far in the commute? >> we will talk to lisa in a moment. in northern italy there was a 5.8 magnitude quake that shook the region. italian media reports at least eight people died. some survivors are still buried in the rubble.

jay von brown was missing. he went missing at 11:00 a.m. sunday. so take a look. it's been a long search for a lot of them. he lives in this apartment complex with his mother, between 13th and 14th. police are staged in the parking lot. that is the last spot where he was seen. he was playing right outside in that parking lot sunday morning. take a close look at the picture of six-year-old jay von brown. when he was last seen, he had on a green t-shirt with a white t-shirt underneath, blue jeans, red and black shoes. his grandmother, tina brown, is pleading for her grandson's safe return. >> i came up here at 9:00. to find him and i have been looking since. i just want him to come home. if anybody have him, if anybody see him, just bring him home. >> reporter: you can imagine what this family is going through. i'm told by other members of the family that jay von lives with his mother and his mother has sole custody of her son. his father is in jail, so there is no other family member who could have taken off with him. they were hoping if you take a close look at the picture, you wi

tribute to d.c. music legend chuck brown. they lined up by the thousands outside howard theater for a public viewing of the late father of go go. fox 5's karen gray houston was out there, also. this was like a celebration. >> it was a celebration of the man's life and it was a day long viewing. it was supposed to end at 10:00, but around 8:30 torrential rain and lightning and thunder forced d.c. police to close the doors. angry fans protested and the doors were reopened. the wake for the most part was more joyful than sad. many fans just wanted to see chuck brown one last time. the day had a somber beginning for the tens of thousands of loyal chuck brown fans who lined up outside howard theater for the chance to file by his casket. as flamboyant in death as he ever was in life, but nothing could stop some folks from turning a sober event into a happy occasion. the wake spilled over into a huge public block party. where go go was not just for older music lovers, but diehard fans have strong memories. >> his greatest legacy is how much he loved doing what he did and sharing it wit

. >> the public gets a chance to say goodbye this week to d.c. musical legend chuck brown. today a public hearing for the "godfather of go-go will be held at the howard theater in d.c. jummy olabanji is live in northwest with a look ahead. >> good morning. we are outside the howard theatre. even at this early morning hours, preparations are underway. you can see crews are putting up several dozen of those steel grates that will be the line for people waiting to see chuck brown. he died last week after suffering from pneumonia. he was 75 years old. the public viewing will take place today at the howard theatre beginning at 11:00 this morning. that will go until 10:00 tonight. everyone is invited. members of his family will be here as well as his band mates. and city dignitaries including d.c. mayor vincent gray. on thursday, that's when there will be a public memorial service. that will be held at the d.c. convention center from noon until 3:00. that is expected to be a heavily attended event as well. just a reminder for anyone wanting to come out, here this out d.c. police have this area blocked
